Hey everyone, so I was just thinking about this the other day and I was wondering what genre of otome games do you guys enjoy most (ie: historical, horror, typical daily life, fantasy, etc)?

My favorite tend towards historical mostly because of the outfits and I find history pretty interesting in general even if they take liberties with the story.

I think I prefer historical or fantasy. I absolutely loved the ten days with my devil series! u///u I think honestly it depends on the art; all the prince based ones caught my eyes and surprisingly some of the routes made a very happy person... But my favorite are forbidden fantasy romances... They get me crying like a baby. Which I very rarely cry during an otome game, but when I found the Forbidden Romance games .... I was gone. XD So I think it also depends on my mood... But I go through moods where I like normal type romances as well. P:
Otaku Trash with a helping of Otome obsession.
I don't do most 'side stories' I prefer to pay for the full multiple chapter stories.

I have to agree with art being a huge factor in which games I pick up. Historical games give the game the edge for me but art is what gets me to pay attention to the game at all. XD

A few days ago, I was talking with a guy who plays and reviews RPGs and we were geeking out over Undertale. He decided to rattle off a bunch of games that might pique my interest, but I had researched most of them here and there out of curiosity beforehand. I would have to at least try them to determine if I would even like them at all. While in my completive mode, he wanted to know what types of games I actually prefer to get a better idea of what to suggest. I said fantasy, and I did tell him a while back that I play visual novels... Too many visual novels...

But fantasy is a broad genre, naturally. In my thoughts shot the term "urban fantasy," but I kept it in my brain out of slight embarrassment. Even though he classified things like the high fantasy realms, I frankly don't care all that much in the long run. Fantasy is great because it can cover so much ground, and the potential dualities that could exist in those worlds are refreshing escapes from the world in which we live. With fantasy in general, it can mean a whole breadth of possibilities. Nothing is more exciting than world-building, where everything is on the table. Since the majority of otome games do not have a moveable sprite with an explorable world, written elaborations are greatly appreciated. All these years of playing freemium otoge with vague writing that appeals to the lowest denominator makes me desire the fantastic more than ever.

That said, I like the genre of fantasy more than historical. I dislike slice of life overall, especially as otome games, and I find historical more on that same track, even if it is a foreign reality to my modern life. They walk around town, eat food, sleep, occasionally have a mob about to attack them. Oh, gosh. I need a little more adventure than that. Slice of life is so... self-contained. The main things that uplift historical games for me are the additional fantasy and supernatural aspects, which is common, due to those being set in the days of lore and superstition. And I consider straightforward historical otome games to be different from games that are cited to be based on existing history, like superimposing rapper culture in feudal Japan.

I think a lot of people I know also really have no interest in slice of life stories at all. I'm just the opposite though~ I tend to find them fascinating since I'm always curious about how other people live and experience life since we all have such varied experiences, history especially since it's difficult to imagine how hard things were back then. Anyway, I agree fantasy is a really, really broad genre and if I had to go with a fantasy genre I would go with urban too. Also, agreed on the vague writings of games.

I suppose I'll go with fantasy for now. Castles, kings, princes, princesses, knights, peasants, townships, brothels, quests, those rpg elements.

I'm going through a slice of life one right now, and somewhat enjoying it, but I am leaning towards high fantasy, and the fantastic art that comes along with it. Most of the time I'm not impressed with the plot, since I'm so used to reading literary fiction/literature, graphic novels, and comics where the caliber of writing is higher and there is actually sequential art as opposed to repetition of a few images over and over. It's really hard to let those standards go, even if I know the otoge genre is totally different in terms of how it appeals to its audience. So, I lean towards games where I'm impressed by the universe it's in, the art that builds it, and all the world building that goes into it- those things can still draw me in, even if the writing feels like something an average fan fic writer might put together.

I'm willing to give historical ones a try, but I tend to read so much historical fiction already, as well as nonfiction, so I tend to be irritated by details that they aren't getting right.

@Solitude I love historical stories although a lot of the historical ones are now getting rather repetitive...
