I think taro is mostly a Chinese thing since I've never actually seen it outside of China or Chinese influenced areas and even in China it was rare to see outside the Canton region. I have seen some frozen yogurt shops carry taro flavor in my neighborhood which was surprising but so not as good as taro ice cream but I guess I will have to make due. =( Speaking of which even the taro ice cream in China now doesn't compare to the taste of it when I first had it years ago. I must be really picky. >.<

@kokoro-cafe: Do you know how to make Hong Kong style mango pudding? I heard that the recipe uses raw egg yolk to make the pudding creamier? I only get to eat yummy mango pudding whenever I get the chance to go visit a pricey dimsum restaurant in Hong Kong

I've made it a couple of times lol but I don't remember how I made it   I'll give it a try again once mangos are in season again. I know for sure I didn't use raw eggs for that recipe though lol and it turned out pretty good.

Have you ever been Hui Lau Shan in Hong Kong? It's like a dessert shop that specializes in mango everything, mainly mango pudding and it's delicious. Again it's not as good as it used to be but it still is pretty good. The only place I remember seeing it was in Mongkok if you take the MTR and take the exit D1/D2 then walk across that giant street there should be a shop somewhere on your left hand side if you keep going down the row of shops.  It may be a block or two down.  There's actually an exit located across the giant street from D1/D2 I just can't remember what it was called.

@kokoro-cafe: Hooray! I'll be waiting for your special mango pudding recipe  It was my first love for dessert when I was 8 years old and I can't forget it ever since   I have actually tried Hui Lau Shan's mango pudding a few years back  :shock2: My mom and I always stayed in Ah Shan hostel and there used to be a Hui Lau Shan store. I remembered seeing the heart shaped plate from Google images because I ordered the large one but I didn't like it much

But!

I like this mango pudding from this restaurant  :excited: Here's the picture of their menu and the pictures of what we ordered and the mango pudding   I can't read the name of the restaurant because I don't know much on Mandarin and I don't know Cantonese

Fried Pork Dumplings (Ham Sui Gok), Radish Cake in XO sauce, Fried Spring Roll, Pork & Century Egg Congee, Mixed Vegetables with Tofu, ?, Mango Pudding

I also got pictures of other food we ate while we were in Hong Kong last year   I also took pictures in Avenue of Stars and Madame Tussauds

@joanie Ooooo those look yummy! I miss HK lol~~ Actually now that I think of it I did try one of those other mango desserts in Hui Lau Shan and it was pretty mediocre.  I always just buy the mango pudding drinks.  :giggle: They use to taste so much better though and the cup use to be fuller, now they are skimping.  :wry:

Anyway, think the restaurant is called jing dian dian xin in mandarin (either that or dian jing dian xin .... which makes no sense to me... soooo the first two characters are probably suppose to be read right to left and the last two characters left to right, but then my Chinese understanding skills aren't crazy good either), I can read it out loud in canto but I don't know how to type the pronunciation.   I've never actually been to that restaurant though~~ waaaay to many restaurants in HK and places change out so quickly. :dizzy: Do you remember where it was? I can go try next time I'm over there.  :giggle:

@kokoro-cafe: Thanks for the pinyin! I realized that I got the wrong restaurant name because I somehow remembered that dian xin is snack, because that's what my mom tells me in Fookien, sorry for the confusion  The restaurant is in Mongkok, it is near HSBC building  :book:

mmm I should start on thinking about the recipes I like to do frequently.. chicken with pink grapefuit and pink pepper sauce? Rosted potatoes with spices and chili tomato sauce?
yes, i like to eat spicy tings..
or maybe "local" recipes from south-east of France ( quite similar to italian food) Yep, I definitely translate some of them!

yep: there is one super easy:
socca ( roasted chickpeas pancake from Nizza)

You need 250 g of chickpeas flour, 1/2 liter of water, 6 table spoon olive oil, salt and peper
1- pour the water in a big bowl
2- mix the chickpeas flour using a whisk, until  no lump is left
3- add the salt and 2 spoons olive oil
4- preheat the oven at max. temperature for 10 minutes, pour olive oil on a big baking tray (idealy a round one), heat the oil for 5 minutes
5- without roasting your own fingers, pour the flour mix on the baking tray ( max 3 mm thick), and let grill during 5 minutes. No problem if some parts are slightly burned :D
6- when it's done, just slice the " pancake" and add a good amout of pepper on it.
ready to eat!
(traditionnally its baked on copper trays, as large as a paella pan, in a wood stove;; so if you have a pizza stove and a paella pan, that would be efficient)

here you can see what I mean by " big round baking tray" http://http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f0/Socca_a_Nice.jpg

it's usually served like this, not neatly sliced, and you eat it using fingers ( it's often served during festivals, or open air events instead of sandwiches)
Not really a pretty dish, but I could eat tons!

the essential part is to use olive oil, and only olive oil. And socca must be eaten immediately, it's not the kind of thing you can bake and eat tomorrow.

(hint: the same dish using ground cumin instead of pepper, is called "calentica" and mainly a north africa specialty)

Thinking of Be My Princess' current event, it would be amusing if we made obligatory chocolates for the forum and posted them~ However, all I think that I can do is make chocolate rice – champorado.

I really want to try this recipe soon after I get chickpeas flour. I just heard about this kind of flour after read your recipe.
And I can't wait for your next posting, chicken with pink grapefuit. I love spicy food. My mouth can take it but sadly not my tummy

This is a bit old but, as I was sifting through my photos, I found a picture I took of Pandan.

It was funny b/c I ran into it like the day after it was mentioned here. I just forgot to post it while topic was fresh.
